'End slave labor'
Members and supporters of Workfairness, an organization
fighting for jobs and union rights for workfare workers,
demonstrated in front of the workfare center here Oct. 1.
Picketers carried signs demanding fair treatment, real jobs
with full benefits--and an end to the slave labor of Mayor
Rudolph Giuliani's Work Experience Program.
Workfairness co-founder Larry Holmes demanded that Giuliani
pass the jobs bill now before the city council. This bill would
provide real jobs for welfare recipients, and pay more than the
minimum wage. Giuliani has said he will veto it.
Workfairness Co-Chairs William Mason and Vondora Jordan
rallied their fellow WEP workers to keep fighting, and several
WEP workers spoke out about the struggle. Other speakers
included B. Chi Young of Emmaus House Harlem, and
representatives of the Coalition for the Homeless, the National
Organization for Women, Service Employees Local 1199 Health and
Hospital Workers, and Federation of Teachers Local 3882 New
York University clerical workers.
