Support for immigrant workers

UNITE Local 169 held a march Nov. 10 to New York's Lower East Side, where it is attempting to organize green grocer workers, most of whom are immigrants. Before the march, speakers at a short rally included David Riker, director of "La Ciudad," a powerful film on immigrants; a city council member; community representatives; and union leaders. The march was to demand immigrant rights, decent pay and union representation.

The speakers also focused on the hypocrisy of Craig Nelsen and Herman Badillo. Nelsen's family owns fast food joints on the Lower East Side that employ immigrants. Earlier this year, he reportedly sold his share and used the proceeds to put up anti-immigrant posters in New York, North Carolina and Florida.

Badillo is head of the City University of New York's trustees. He has recently attacked Mexicans and Dominicans who want to attend CUNY as lacking the "proper orientation towards education."

Badillo is a graduate of City College, a part of CUNY.
