NEW YORK
Village Voice hit for anti-trans coverage
Fifty activists from the lesbian/ gay/bi/ trans movement
protested outside the New York offices of the Village Voice
newspaper on Dec. 12. The demonstration was initiated by Metro
Gender Network, Metropolitan Community Church and Fed-Up Queers
after a sensationalized interview with transman Drew
Seidman.
The front cover of the paper featured a mutilated Barbie
Doll. Its female genitalia and breasts were removed and
replaced was that of a man. The headline read "Suddenly Not
Susan."
"I wish that somehow the Voice and Norah Vincent could
comprehend why the trans community has an issue with the cover
and the article, but that's going to take more of us being more
active and visible," Seidman told Workers World.
At the demonstration, activists tried to deliver a list of
five demands to the editors of the Voice. But the Voice staff
refused to meet and had protesters removed by security.
Also represented at the demonstration were members of the
New York Anti-Violence Project, Amboyz and Workers World.
