Something stinks at the San Diego Union-Tribune
Hundreds of San Diego Union-Tribune pressroom workers from
the Graphic Communications union and their supporters rallied
outside the newspaper to protest the company's stubborn refusal
to negotiate a fair contract.
Accusing the daily newspaper monopoly of blatant corporate
greed, the workers pointed out that the company has refused any
wage increases for seven years, has repeatedly imposed unfair
working conditions, has threatened to take away union pensions,
and has imposed paycheck health insurance deductions that are
10 times higher than for other workers at the company.
The union has a three-pronged strategy for fighting back.
First, they intend to mobilize the 100,000-member union
movement of San Diego County for frequent rallies at the
Union-Tribune building. Second, they are escalating a program
of leafleting the newspaper's major advertisers and at public
forums.
Third, if the company remains intransigent, the union will
call for a boycott of the newspaper. Readers wishing to let
company president Gene Bell know that "something stinks at the
Union-Tribune" can call him at (619) 299-3131.
