NEW YORK
Marching for Mumia
On Sept. 25, some 1,000 people marched in New York as part
of Mumia Awareness Week. One group started at noon in Harlem in
front of the State Office Building and marched to Columbus
Circle. They were greeted there by another group of Abu-Jamal's
supporters.
A brief rally stressed the racist nature of the death
penalty, why Abu-Jamal should get a new trial and how the
battle to free him is connected to the struggle to free all of
the political prisoners in the United States.
The protesters marched down Broadway to Times Square. The
marchers, wending their way through busy shopping areas
thronged with tourists and residents, were well received. Many
of the thousands of people who took the leaflets had heard of
Mumia Abu-Jamal and wanted more information about his
struggle.
