LONGSHORE UNION SAYS
'Stop work for Mumia'
In an important act of labor solidarity with the San
Francisco "Millions for Mumia" demonstration, the union
representing West Coast longshore workers has called on its
members to stop work on April 24.
The Longshore union has been active in supporting Mumia
Abu-Jamal's struggle for a new trial for more than 10 years.
Abu-Jamal also championed the International Longshore and
Warehouse Union's actions in support of dockers in Liverpool,
England.
ILWU passed the resolution in March. It calls on every local
to plan "stop work meetings" on April 24 and shut down dock
work for a full shift.
"There are two important ideas behind this," said Steve
Stallone, editor of the Dispatcher, the ILWU newspaper. "One is
that we are about to begin bargaining for a new contract in
late May. The other is to allow people to participate in the
demonstration.
"That will happen on April 24," Stallone told Workers
World.
