NY exhibit of Black artist Cliff Joseph
A retrospective exhibit of the work of artist and social
activist Cliff Joseph will open Jan. 23 at Westbeth Gallery in
New York. It will include over 80 paintings, drawings and
prints spanning the period before the civil rights era to the
present.
Joseph has participated in over 200 exhibitions. His works
have been shown in Paris, Moscow, Lagos and, most recently, on
an extended tour in Vietnam. He became prominent in the late
1960s as part of the movement of Black artists. His focus was
and is not only on racial justice and cultural heritage, but
against war and imperialism.
Westbeth Gallery is at 55 Bethune St. in Manhattan. The
gallery is open from 2 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, Tuesday
and Wednesday. The closing date is Feb. 20. A reception will be
held Jan. 30 from 4 to 8 p.m.
