Gay Pride in Brooklyn
By Pat Chin
Brooklyn, N.Y.
Thousands of lesbian, gay, bi and trans people and their
supporters stepped off into the night here June 12 on a march
celebrating Gay Pride month.
"A Prideful Passage--A Lifelong Journey" was the theme of
this year's activities--the third since Brooklyn's
commemoration of Gay Pride began in 1997.
The parade drew huge crowds of cheering spectators along the
way. It closed a full day of activities that included a fun run
and multicultural festival in Prospect Park.
Marching groups included the Audre Lorde Project, Alianza
Dominicana, Men of All Colors Together, ACT UP/NY, Irish
Lesbian and Gay Organization, Las Buenas Amigas, Workers World
Party, Radical Faeries and Rainbow Flags for Mumia.
Rainbow Flags was composed of a multinational group of
mostly young people. Some joined the contingent along the way.
They carried banners and placards calling for the release of
African American revolutionary journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal.
"Justice for Mumia, free Mumia now," they chanted.
Abu-Jamal's supporters say he was framed by the Philadelphia
police in the fatal shooting of a cop. He has been on death row
since 1982 and is seeking a new trial. The young people of
Rainbow Flags for Mumia are part of a growing international
movement that is demanding justice for the Black political
prisoner.
Other signs said "Fight racism and war," linking the
struggle to free Abu-Jamal with a call for "U.S./NATO hands off
Yugo slavia."
