Marines admit using DU in Vieques
The U.S. Marines have admitted using depleted uranium
weapons in Puerto Rico, according to a May 28 report by the
Pulsar news agency. Supporters of independence for the island
nation presented evidence of the DU bombs to a Special
Commission studying the effects of the U.S. military presence
in Vieques.
The Pentagon uses a DU coating to make harder, heavier
projectiles and vehicles. Explosions of DU weapons scatter
radioactive uranium dust into the environment, posing health
risks for people living in the area.
Puerto Rico has been a colony of the United States since
1898. Thirteen percent of the island is occupied by U.S.
military installations.
