'Our Party's top priority in upcoming months'
WW Party Conference: Excerpts from a talk by Judi
Cheng
During the last year our Party has been in the forefront of
the most pressing confrontations with the capitalist ruling
class.
Our program and our orientation put our members in the
leadership of the large anti-war actions against the criminal
U.S./NATO war in Yugoslavia.
We helped give leadership to ongoing solidarity with the
people of Iraq who suffer as a result of the genocidal policy
of sanctions led by U.S. imperialism.
We played a significant organizing role against the killer
cops who gunned down Amadou Diallo and the countless victims of
police terror. We helped organize workfare workers against
workfare slavery.
Our members and friends led protests and were arrested in
the vast demonstrations against the murder of Matthew Shepard
and in support of lesbian, gay, bi and trans struggles against
bigotry.
Just last week our comrades in Phila delphia confronted and
disrupted Bill Clinton in an inspiring act of solidarity with
the people of Puerto Rico who are struggling to end the U.S.
Navy's murderous abuse of Vieques.
We have carried out the urgent mobilization of all our
branches, our members and our friends in the struggle to
prevent the execution of our brother Mumia Abu-Jamal.
This important struggle will continue to be at the very top
of our Party's priorities in the coming months.
And today we are happy to announce that Workers World Party
has decided to run another national election campaign in the
year 2000. We are again putting forward as candidates Monica
Moorehead for president and Gloria La Riva for vice
president.
These are two workers, two women, two people of color, two
fighters against reaction.
And the Moorehead-La Riva campaign poses an electrifying
alternative to the candidates of big business. Their campaign
will be based on revolutionary socialism.
But this campaign will begin with a special focus. We
believe that the electoral struggle must be put into the
context of the real living struggle as it exists.
That means that our first priority of the campaign in coming
months will focus on the urgent need to organize mass action to
save the life of Mumia Abu-Jamal.
