A book with a message for freedom

By Kathy Durkin

Harvey Earvin, leading prison activist on Texas' notorious death row, was the first person to donate to the republication of the historic writing, "A Voice from Harper's Ferry." This book, of importance to anti-racist fighters everywhere, is based on a first-hand account of John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry by Osborne P. Anderson, the only African American survivor of that courageous action.

It gives a vivid account of this bold undertaking, which was a military assualt on slavery. It thoroughly discredits the racist view of the Harper's Ferry events. The manuscript, long out of print, was recovered in 1974 by Vincent Copeland, and it became a popular pamphlet. Copeland was a founder of Workers World Party and editor of Workers World newspaper.

Now, this work is being reprinted in book form. In addition to Copeland's introduction entitled "The Unfinished Revolution," this 128-page volume contains a brand-new forward by revolutionary Mumia Abu-Jamal, written from Pennsylvania's death row. Monica Moorehead, Workers World Party 1996 presidential candidate, contributed an essay on national oppression in the United States for this edition.

Another new publication representing the work of Vincent Copeland will be printed simultaneously. "Market Elections: How Democracy Serves the Rich," is compiled from two series of articles from the pages of this newspaper. This book tells the history of U.S. elections as it really was--democracy by and for the rich.

Copeland reviews the realities of capitalist politics from Andrew Johnson's presidency to Lyndon Johnson's. Of importance to today's struggles, Copeland explains how the power of the people can successfully challenge the plans of the rich and powerful.

This 324-page volume is footnoted and indexed to give much information on all of the U.S. presidencies up until 1976. Its lessons are relevant today. The book can be used as an educational tool for the upcoming 2000 elections to explain and expose what capitalist electoral politics are all about.

Both books tell the truth about the real history of this country.

The two new editions have multi-colored covers, photographs, and are perfect-bound, suitable for bookstore and literature table displays. They will be published and ready for the Workers World Party Conference Nov. 6-7.

The publishers invite everyone to participate in the publication of these books and help get them to activists. Those who donate $100 per book can have their name printed on the acknowledgements pages and will receive a copy of the book. To contribute, write checks to WW Publishers, and send them to 55 W. 17 St., New York, N.Y. 10011, earmarked for "New Books." Indicate whether you want to be listed in one or both books.
