'No water, no power--we must stop this barbaric war!'
Gloria La Riva, who visited Yugoslavia in mid-May with a
delegation from the International Action Center, says that
since she returned friends there have told her by telephone
that the bombing has gotten much worse. Tihomir Trivunac said
on May 25 that "It's terrible right now. I think NATO waited
until you left, because they are now constantly attacking the
electrical grid in Belgrade, not to disable, but to
destroy.
"Since the last three days, two-thirds of Belgrade doesn't
have water now. Can you imagine? No water, no sewage in New
Belgrade, because without electricity the sewage pumps can't
work."
New Belgrade, La Riva reports, is the northern district of
the capital with a population of 800,000. The Chinese Embassy
is located there.
Trivunac said, "All the hospitals here are now running
without electricity. There are many children who are in danger,
and babies in incubators. People can't get dialysis. The
generators are only supposed to operate for emergencies. They
have no spare capacity left.
"This is not a war. It is genocide, and the people are
trying hard to survive. Last night they sent two missiles very
near my home. This is unbelievable. People are totally shocked
that we are under attack by America."
La Riva says, "It is so critical for every person of
conscience to act, to organize, to help build opposition to
this barbaric war. We've got to get thousands and thousands of
people to the Pentagon and to San Francisco on June 5. And each
day beyond that must be an organizing day against the war.
We've got to stop this U.S.-NATO crime."
