IRVINGTON, N.J.
'Justice for Max Antoine!'
Hundreds gathered in front of the Irvington, N.J., police
department Oct. 16 to demand justice for Max Antoine.
Irvington cops tortured Antoine, a Haitian immigrant, on
June 2, 1996. Witnesses reported that Antoine--then a
paralegal--was singled out by police and beaten after he
demanded the names and badge numbers of cops who were
reportedly harassing celebrants at his sister's birthday
party.
Today Max Antoine is confined to a wheelchair, permanently
paralyzed from the waist down. His left eye was destroyed by
mace and he is deaf in one ear. He suffered severe injuries to
his bladder, bowels and head. Antoine has had 20 operations
since the attack. His hospital bills are over $650,000--and
still climbing. He, his wife and their two children survive on
a meager Social Security disability check.
Antoine is still being openly persecuted by the power
structure. He faces trumped-up felony charges--while the cops
who permanently disabled him three years ago remain unpunished.
A grand jury refused to indict the police. The U.S. Justice
Department has rejected requests to intervene.
Contributions are urgently needed to help pay for Max
Antoine's legal defense and health care. Send contributions to:
Max Antoine Justice and Defense Fund, P.O. Box 330, Rochelle
Park, NJ 07662. For more information contact the Justice for
Max Antoine Committee, (201) 487-3748 or email
