Anti-racists stop Nazi march
By Jim McMahan
Coeur d'Alene,Idaho
The annual march of the ultra-racist Aryan Nations of Idaho
was halted by anti-racist on July 10. Demonstrators converged
on Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, from throughout the region and the
country.
About 20 Aryan Nation fascists marched down Sherman Avenue
in Coeur d'Alene under the protection of a court order and a
heavy police presence. They were met by a storm of chanting
from 500 demonstrators organized by the Coalition Against
Nazis.
Three blocks into the march, youth from Anti-Racist Action
of Idaho barricaded the street with a banner that read, "No
Pasaran--They Shall Not Pass." In the face of fierce opposition
from all sides, the Aryan Nation was forced to slither away
down a side street and end their march.
When the anti-racist demonstrators attempted to take the
streets for their own march, the cops attacked them and
arrested four anti-fascists.
Anti-Nazi protesters then converged on a nearby park for a
victory rally organized by CAN.
The Aryan Nation has for years demanded the establishment of
a "white homeland" in the Northwest. Their followers have
carried out bombings, shootings and other acts of racist
terror.
Opposition to the Nazis came from Anti-Racist Action, the
United Front Against Fascism and many other organizations.
People mobilized from Canada, the Midwestern states of the
U.S., from Coeur d'Alene and throughout the region in order to
say no to racism.
