'U.S. Navy out of Vieques'
One of the most laudable departures from business as usual
at the AFL-CIO convention came when the delegates voted to pass
Resolution #35: Viva Vieques. The resolution puts the U.S.
labor movement on record calling for the U.S. Navy to get out
of Vieques.
The resolution lists some of the outrages and abuses arising
from the Navy using Vieques for "target practice"--killing
Puerto Rican civilians, creating health hazards "including a
very high incidence of cancer," causing environmental harm and
contaminating the water and air. It notes that "the People of
Vieques have unanimously demanded that the U.S. Navy cease its
bombings and leave the island."
The resolution expresses support and solidarity for the
people of Vieques, calls on President Bill Clinton to order an
end to the bombing and remove the Navy from Vieques, and
demands "that the U.S. Navy make reparations" for the
environmental, social and economic destruction it has caused in
Vieques.
