NYC April 4 protest vs. racism, police brutality
By Sharon Ayling
New York
A coalition of labor unions, religious leaders,
and civil-rights and grassroots organizations are planning a
massive march and rally to take place in New York April 4. The
action will mark the 30th anniversary of the assassination of
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Rev. Al Sharpton is one of the event's chief organizers.
He called the march a "bold commitment" to let the world know
that "we must make Dr. King's dream a reality, because racism
and police brutality are still alive."
Participants in the April 4 event will gather at 11 a.m. at
59th Street and Central Park West for a march to Times Square.
There, a 1 p.m. rally will be held.
The marchers will demand an end to poverty, racism and all
forms of discrimination, enforcement of civil rights, and
expansion of workers' rights to organize and bargain
collectively.
Sponsors of the march include the New York City Central
Labor Council, Local 1199 National Health and Human Service
Employees Union, AFSCME District Council 37, Workfairness, the
Hispanic Education and Legal Fund, and the National Action
Network.
