Strike settled at Einstein
Workers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine,
represented by 1199 National Health and Human Services
Employees Union/service Employees, reached a contract
settlement after two-and-a-half days on strike. At a membership
meeting on Nov. 13, about 80 percent of the membership voted to
accept the agreement for a 7-percent wage increase and a $1,500
bonus in a three-year contract. Workers also strengthened their
job security protection.
The settlement was a little better than the city-wide
pattern negotiated by 1199 for 6 percent with an $1,800 bonus
over 40 months. Many of the wage rates at Einstein are higher
than citywide and management had sworn they would not increase
that gap. The increase in the form of an extra 1 percent on the
rates instead of as a bonus was a setback for the boss. While
some were disappointed by the modest size of the gain, most
workers were satisfied with the settlement, since the strike,
almost 100-percent solid, was relatively short.
