Hearing set for Mumia Abu-Jamal

Supporters of Pennsylvania death-row prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal are mobilizing to attend what is expected to a be a dramatic Oct. 1 hearing in Philadelphia.

Abu-Jamal's attorneys are attempting to wage a legal and political battle to make Judge Albert Sabo listen to vital testimony from Veronica Jones, one of the original prosecution witnesses. Jones now says that police pressured her into testifying against Abu-Jamal by threatening her and offering her relief from her own legal difficulties.

Mumia Abu-Jamal's supporters are organizing transportation to the hearing from New York and other cities. New York-area readers can call the Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition hotline at (212) 330-8029 or Equal Justice in Washington at (301) 699-0042.

Tickets from New York to Philadelphia can be purchased for $15 at the International Action Center, 39 W. 14 St., (212) 633-6646. Or people can show up at 7 a.m. on Oct. 1 at the main post office at Eighth Avenue and 33 Street in Manhattan.
