-------------------------Cleveland teachers protest mayor's takeover
By Ted Dostal in Cleveland
The 5,000-strong Cleveland Teachers Union rallied in front of Cleveland City Hall Dec. 27 to protest the proposed takeover of the school system by Cleveland's Mayor Michael White.
Why? Because the union knows that the mayor's control of the schools would result in the people of Cleveland having no control of the schools. Also, the union feels that the corporate interests of the city who influence the mayor would also control the resources that belong to the schools.
The demonstration received considerable news coverage indicating the issue's importance.
This demonstration was a first step. The union is planning a rally in the state capital, Columbus, protesting the state legislature's possible action to give White control of the public schools.
