Gay Families Highlight Boston Pride March

By Frank Neisser in Boston

With the theme of "Pride Without Borders," more than 100,000 lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgendered people and their supporters participated in Boston's 26th annual Gay Pride dem onstra tion June 8.

A militant march of lesbians preceded the event for the second year in a row.

Gay families were a central focus. Gay parents and children marched together in a visible answer to Bill Clinton and Bob Dole's pandering to homophobia and their opposition to gay marriage.

One presidential candidate marched in the parade, however. Workers World Party's Monica Moorehead generated excitement and a very positive response as she led a spirited contingent from the Party and the National People's Campaign in both events.

Over 900 demonstrators signed petitions to get Moorehead and vice-presidential candidate Gloria La Riva on the Massachusetts ballot in November.

The night, before a multinational crowd heard Moorehead describe her program at a forum hosted by the campaign. It featured Latina, African American and white lesbian, gay and transgendered artists and political activists. Craig Hickman, Imani Henry, Tina D'elia, Aleta Alston, "Dyke March" organizer Laurie Holmes and AIDS community activist Gerry Scoppetuolo spoke and performed.
