Editorial: April 27 in Philadelphia--be there!

President Clinton's "summit" planned for Philadelphia on April 27 is more than just a farce. It is a direct challenge to the progressive, mass movement in this country. And it must be met head-on.

This is what the protest at April 27 is all about.

Everyone should be there.

Clinton, Gen. Colin Powell and many top representatives of U.S. finance and industrial capital-as well as dozens of big business political leaders-are all uniting in the "City of Brotherly Love" to push one main message: The government that every week takes money from your paycheck won't be there when you need help. Anyone seeking relief from the terrible hardships imposed by capitalism should try to get it from "volunteers." This government works strictly for the billionaires.

The working class needs to respond: "We already help out our neighbors through volunteer work. We've done this for years. Yet you keep cutting and cutting. The time has come for us to stop this war on our lives. We intend to unmask your hypocritical extravaganza in Philadelphia."

Only a militant, united struggle can counter the summit. Because the event there is a united ruling-class effort. Top Republicans like ex-President George Bush will be sharing the stage with the welfare-cutting Democrat, Clinton. So will corporate CEOs. And then there's Powell, whose political education and grooming come from the Pentagon. All these characters have two things in common: they're in the camp of the rich and they all support the current phase of capitalist restructuring, cutbacks and repression.

Since the bosses are united in attacking our class, we must unite in beating back their assault-starting with overturning the heinous anti-welfare law.

Thousands of demonstrators have already signed up to protest the April 27 Summit. Be there.
