Simple Tips for More Exact Searches

All searches are case insensitive and accent insensitive. Searching for "Fur" will match the lowercase "fur", uppercase "FUR", and German "für".

Use quotes around two or more words to limit the search to just those words appearing together. For example, a search for Malcolm X will turn up all articles with the name Malcolm as well as the letter x anywhere in the article. But a search for "Malcolm X" (using the quote marks in the search box) will limit the search to only the appearance of the full name Malcolm X in the article.

Including or excluding words:

To make sure that a specific word is always included in your search topic, place the plus (+) symbol before the key word in the search box. To make sure that a specific word is always excluded from your search topic, place a minus (-) sign before the keyword in the search box.

Example: To find articles about anti-war protests in 2003 but not in 2002, try anti-war protest +2003 -2002.

Expand your search using wildcards (*):

By typing an * at the end of a keyword, you can search for the word with multiple endings.

Example: Try wish*, to find wish, wishes, wishful, wishbone, and wishy-washy.
