Petition campaign: Water is a human right

Published Mar 21, 2009 8:59 AM

Detroit residents will be able to clearly demand the implementation of a Water Affordability Plan if 10,000 signatures are gathered by May 18. The petition drive to put the proposal on the November election ballot is being organized by the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization. At the petitioning kick off on March 7, 40 organizers geared up to hit the streets.

In 2006 the Detroit City Council passed a Water Affordability Plan, but it wasn’t implemented by the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. Thousands of Detroiters, hard hit even before the current economic crisis, are suffering the shut-off of water service threatening health and life. Unpaid high water bills are now added to Detroit property tax bills, increasing foreclosures for unpaid taxes!
