The Women’s Fightback Network held a reception and round-table
discussion on April 19 at the Solidarity Center in New York City for Emmi De
Jesus, secretary-general of Gabriela, a mass women’s organization based
in the Philippines. De Jesus, standing behind the podium, had toured the United
States since April 6, speaking on efforts by the Filipino movement to resist
all forms of human rights violations taking place in her country by the
U.S.-backed regime of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The Philippines has been a
semicolony of the U.S. since 1898.
