Three-quarters of a million workers have already been laid off this year,
bringing the official total of unemployed to over 9 million. Trillions of
dollars in retirement funds have been wiped out in the stock market in the last
few months. Over 10,000 households a day are being foreclosed, and evictions
are rampant. Money for student loans has dried up. Credit card debt is at a
record high. Unemployment is rising along with food, utility and gas prices.
Production and sales are falling relentlessly. The forecast is for things to
get worse—a lot worse....

people depend on the tax benefits of being claimed as a dependent on their
parents’ tax return.
Recently, in attempts to stifle the voice of the young, voting officials have
threatened to take these things away from young people if they dare to

According to realtytrac.com, California already has 338,000 foreclosures filed
in 2008, making it the number one U.S. state in foreclosures, with one-quarter
of the 1,348,000 filed foreclosures countrywide this year. The crisis in
California prompted the union and community organizations to create a
Labor/Community Coalition to Stop Foreclosures and Evictions, which meets at
the SEIU Local 721 office located in downtown Los Angeles....

A little over one year ago 12-year-old Deamonte Driver died in Maryland after
infection from an abscessed tooth spread to his brain. His mother, Alyce
Driver, had spent a considerable amount of time prior to his death trying to
find dental care for her children. Although Alyce was a working mother, none of
her jobs in a bakery, construction or home health care provided the insurance
she needed to care for her children....
